A nine-year-old girl whose brain tumour was missed by doctors six times was saved by opticians after her worried mother took her for an eye test.

Shanice Bailey could have been left paralysed by a rare plum-sized 'schwannoma' tumour growing out of a nerve and pressing on her brain stem.

She visited GPs six times between September 2009 and January this year complaining of headaches and sickness but was repeatedly diagnosed with asthma and sent away.

They confuse a huge brain tumor with asthma..?

WTF!?

I don't think they did a scan before the optician noticed signs of involvement of the optic nerve.

It wouldn't be SOP to eventually do a scan for someone who complained of constant headaches...?

      Just curious.

Astonishingly, no. It depends on the conditions of the headache. If it's a sudden onset or thunderclap, then more likely, if it's "the worst headache of my life" or otherwise seriously debilitating then more likely, if it's accompanied by certain other factors, then almost definitely (change in vision, speech, muscular control or coordination)...

I didn't see a reference to constant headaches, nor even persistence.

          Wouldn't this count?

Although, by the way this is worded, it is hard to tell if the headaches and sickness happened on every visit, or just the most recent visit in January...
